Photo Guide

Reference Photos

I like to work from good quality reference photos to achieve the best result.  Of course if your portrait is a memorial piece. I’m happy to work with any photos available.  Please be aware however that better quality references achieve a more accurate and detailed portrait

Angle

When taking your photo, try to get down at the same level as your pet so their eyes meet yours.  When I have drawn a pet looking up above, their heads can look disproportional to their bodies.

Lighting

If photos have been taken inside or with artificial light, it can diminish the details that make the portrait more realistic. If you can, take your photo outside or near a window on a clear and sunny day.
